about 1.5 hours south-west of Toronto.

that if he could replicate any of my successes.
/ ~8 L- x& _+ tThe college degree that he is completing is in human resources management and he may& v0 {. ?, o8 M9 w- J
have taken only one marketing course in his college life.
  `/ J  |" t* EHe had absolutely no prior Internet marketing experience.
+ a  O: H+ z7 J- ~Zip. Zada. Ziltch.1 ]+ n! f! G6 H9 K; v$ f" Z
All he knew was that I was making large amounts of money every day.
( X6 _0 O6 L' T3 zIt wasn』t after months when I started talking to him about pay per click did he realize5 m5 V+ {. x0 J. ~1 k' z
what I was doing.7 G; D# E6 H, Z; N4 L; e
Based on what he heard in the past, he thought I was in the 「paper clip」 industry.1 G3 E* S% |' a* B  Q
No bro, it is 「pay per click.」
/ c. |- `% t. bI cut him a deal and said that I would teach him all my methods and see if I could get him4 p& F3 x# Q  S( L% H
to make money./ ]6 L$ {6 R+ @, B, f$ O8 Z) N+ l0 ]; R
Not only could I prove to myself that this stuff is teachable and write an entire course on! j9 P5 v5 H" x4 ?
it, I figured I could get an awesome testimonial from my brother-in-law if I ever did
% G' Q! {" f; vrelease a course.) q  N3 |4 |: N8 f$ o6 Q
So he came to my house in mid-May 2006. I was to be his mentor and he was to be the
, F9 C7 O: V. v* ~apprentice./ k- L: r2 \* h. {
Basically, I was Yoda and he was Luke Skywalker as he kept insisting.
  z9 }$ F, T. Y' `! g: gI made a phone call to one of my favorite affiliate managers and had him approved for
9 \9 |  ?4 s# Q: l) E/ W7 tPrimary Ads CPA network in about 24 hours.
1 z% ?8 u) H2 U  k5 {) dI have a white board in my office, so I sat him down and started from scratch.
  |  H$ u" Y+ Z7 j  tI explained to him:" j' P5 e1 h, P/ P
1. What CPA lead offer was.
8 f, s" M" V& J- o2. What a CPA Network was
: }4 w$ Q8 u3 A3. What a pay per click search engine was.8 r. p- e- K0 _1 O: d. v9 l& q
23, ]) o- D9 r$ x- p/ v9 q1 w6 W$ B
I drew out on the white board the concept of driving paid targeted traffic to CPA lead, J' _  {, j0 k3 D  H
offers and making money.2 Y1 Y9 ^; E; A& s
We converted half of the my baby son』s room into a small office so my brother-in-law6 P6 Z  t% t( ~) i; j* n! v. \4 z
could work from there on a separate computer.
/ d( ?7 ?9 w- J( J" t7 cI told him to open up an Google Adwords account and pick an offer from Primary Ads to
+ p* e$ F/ F5 V. ppromote.
1 [+ n& o( [5 R7 x' }3 DThe guy is a fanatic about cars (especially luxury cars) so he picked out a car quote lead" W4 a* G. n+ |) @; ?  `
offer that was paying about $6.25 a lead.
2 o# o! z  P+ y9 N" E' }$ JI told him the basics of doing keyword research and setting up a Google ad.
9 g; S- Y/ h) t  M+ uHe used a software tool called Key××d ××te by Brad Callen to research his keywords
5 [( i7 L& o3 B# _  K5 |and went about setting up ad groups.! @8 i1 D6 @5 O, J) j$ ^
I told him to keep the keywords within each group very specific and targeted towards the9 D; h. o' r- p* A+ u
theme of the ad group.& o5 r7 O% [% w" O/ ]9 G, [( U
For example, and Honda related keywords should be in a Honda ad group so that we
8 A9 `! ]8 y8 ecould write a targeted ad for prospects looking for Honda quotes.3 q1 R" o, ~4 v0 e. s
He then set about creating his ads and ad groups quietly while I worked in my office.0 `$ o% r8 A. j9 c
Big mistake.- p( {1 ]2 V: l8 C
I had basically thrown him into a lake without giving him enough swimming lessons.5 R7 e- W9 `" K
He started getting clicks coming on his ads, but NO conversions.
5 G) n8 Z6 K9 X# F" Q+ R; bMore clicks kept coming, but NO conversions.
$ @7 l7 p: L( g5 j- K! uI started thinking to myself, okay well this is a crap offer.0 e( H& W: w  G; C. {

In my experience, around 7 out of 10 campaigns you start will either breakeven or not be) U1 C1 h# ]9 x" _
profitable at all. No big deal. Mo need to cry over spilled milk. Just move on to another.
) {3 _5 [# W! `5 Z) T' C** End of Note **
4 v$ W/ E  D9 {3 r, r- n) p- uThen I realized a couple of things. I logged into Primary ads and discovered that the car
0 D  x2 x7 G& g+ {quote offer lead stats were not real time and that we would have to wait until the next day
& `. g1 S. f$ w! Tfor those leads to be imported into the network stats.0 R/ B" F, F1 }) j, S, Z
24) v: y$ c5 w5 D, ?5 G: {& l
Okay I said, that is one reason why we are not seeing anything.' I6 n  l' v; R) H' [
Then I logged into his Google Adwords account and was stunned at how badly written$ a( ]! ^3 H5 [- V' N- p' r
his ads were.
( M( i7 `7 h* e) f1 _/ ~2 \Dude, you need Copywriting 101.
$ `+ V9 D; F3 v. |0 C2 [His click-thru rates were not very good, so I told him to rewrite his ads from his' H4 D$ l5 X: N
prospect』s point of view and try to make it more benefit oriented.
/ P- ~- K: I( R  o7 e! s3 S3 \At the same time, I told him to start other easier campaigns such as the ones that only ask
$ x3 {- q) H5 }0 s. U2 l: i. |for a zip code or email address.
+ r% w; r3 V0 `+ k6 VHere is where things got really screwed up.
4 _$ l7 z9 m* W6 g! y9 K0 YWhenever he set up another ad group, Google would charge outrageous minimum bid
4 O, [1 {# z3 @' q2 Mprices. For a particular CPA lead offer he wanted to promote at a $1.25 payout, Google
6 u3 [* R0 t% U* t* p9 kwanted a $1.00 minimum bid on most keywords." }, Z- w# p' J2 j. M" d& v8 t9 ^
Ummmm, how the heck he supposed to make money promoting a $1.25 lead offer while8 H& Z# A: @# {3 t5 }# }) o
paying $1.00 per click. He would have to have close to a 100% conversion rate to make
3 r2 t& b1 X3 o) @' w/ c; p- @any decent money.# M! l1 C& O9 h5 Q
Why, oh why, are you doing this Google?!6 |8 D* F  o# t4 `
Then it hit me… 「Quality Score.」$ n( b& D9 i4 {
You see, Waseem』s overall 「quality score」 was low because of that stupid 「car quote」. K8 ^, [3 \3 R6 I( x/ ~: T
campaign and because Google looks at your historical account click-thru rate, they were
' P8 x/ }* `: s! Q% Ueffectively punishing Waseem for his initial ad campaign.% Z6 R3 o" m% z
Google basis the quality score of any keyword you bid on based on these factors:
# p& q  r- H0 P; k1. Click-thru Rate (CTR)
1 w! a' S* ~% u  O' ?& x' R0 W, ?2. Ad Text
3 r# f8 y4 ]6 k3. Historical Keyword Performance2 Y5 s9 k" u; M" A
4. Landing Page" e/ b# H% u) u5 m- |8 U* d
5. Web Site The Landing Page Is Residing On
& K( U. {3 n4 D. l7 o; I  aGoogle had really nothing to go on as far as click-thru rate or historical keyword
. A7 j0 c. l% Jperformance for his second ad campaign, so they looked at Waseem』s ENTIRE account6 A0 P% i; D' y( S
when determining bid prices.
7 o. y' Q2 e1 @. E9 e* pSo now Yoda is getting pissed and Skywalker is getting frustrated.
$ @2 i* |0 W5 O9 U, T25
& p9 a- [5 s- g8 Z6 gSo at this point… I cheated and told him to get out of the room and put my son to sleep in; {! `6 e% R+ {2 B5 J, F
the other room while I worked on his campaign.
! O; M& p- J% Y; S3 l% mSo I am staring at the computer screen trying to figure out how I am going to make it
8 Z& z* J9 V9 h! P6 W- }work with Google Adwords now that my brother-in-law has a bad historical record.* p) C! v) n/ J; E* }
Google is basically going to punish him for anything new he sets up, so now what?
" W( A  k. F; }" I* GI had the option of just starting an entirely new Google Adwords account to get a fresh
- ]8 @$ l; g& mstart.
; k$ C- k6 V7 e7 }** Note **
+ N# l" c- v/ JIf your Google Adwords account has a bad history of low click-thru rates and crappy ads,
, O' g, p, P3 A4 ^" H! `you may want open a new account and start fresh.
7 ~! e1 Z; b( ?" @) p** End of Note **3 r. p/ `9 d9 A: U  T6 m3 o$ U
I didn』t want to start a new account and based on my experience, I knew of a way around* Q) m: Z& ?# h& `- G( S3 ?, g
this problem.
: W0 B: v" v) x/ ~( O3 s. y! s/ }But it would *cost* my brother-in-law money.2 C1 i, y, t  j7 n5 E- F  K+ Z
I decided to place the minimum bid at $1.00 for the $1.25 lead offer and let the campaign
6 Z* [* i* Q8 v2 V2 {: Srun, but only AFTER I wrote the ads for him hoping that Google would reward this2 D- H- m2 |1 @) i+ M
account if I wrote ads that were very keyword *specific* and had a good click-thru rate.1 G7 v& U) ^: Y7 |" j+ x; W: ~
So, boom! I let it run knowing that every click was costing my 「college-broke」 brotherin-
6 F# o2 m4 v) U( u3 klaw a full dollar.9 b9 E% U) ^- G* S- ~% d
On May 18th, 2006, Waseem generated his first (2) leads at $1.25 a piece for a total of  e) B  ]* B; o
$2.50 in affiliate commissions.1 s$ k  j5 `6 g6 G9 q+ L
But it took him (6) clicks to generate those leads for a total cost of $1.00 x 6 = $6.00.1 r- @& s! M& n8 }- F% L4 x, ^; y
Ouch! He lost $3.50.7 K' M% ?( g8 S. H4 \+ |- x4 u
But a 33% click to lead conversion. Now that is great!
3 ?# _0 R* H5 GSo I tell him to keep running the campaign at a loss and he is looking at me with this3 H1 r& t$ M/ p, n- \
serious 「I am a college student, $3.50 is a huge amount of money to me」 look.- j1 X% Z8 a  Z7 h; b$ t
Trust me, I say.- S6 O# a3 W, q, D! e6 |
The next day, four clicks and zero leads.
( h9 `1 n( F1 s" i0 FNot good.
4 v7 q: U* N. A7 W26+ F4 J3 C5 i% Q# t) B% T
But wait, the click-thru rate on the ad is over 10% for the last two days. Are the Google
3 t- P' r) H! L+ rGods watching?- j  n; O: k+ Q5 e% n- }- {
Not bad ad writing Gauher, pat yourself on the back.
! T7 }! k, U' i4 C3 M2 `7 BBut Waseem is still looking at me with that 「$4 is almost a full lunch at McDonald』s」. L0 |( X- f6 ~2 `% B5 S% B
look., U8 F8 V; P# Z  k

& J: g4 [/ |: [$ I+ p; IThe next day I figured Google must be loving me for my great click-thru rate and I
+ N, j5 J, W3 Y! a7 C$ d, Sdecided to drop the bid drastically.
# X+ n1 K% A) m2 s) b5 \2 qI was hoping that I wouldn』t see the dreaded 「Keyword Inactive: Minimum Bid $1.00
